Hi.

My name is Steve, and I have Internet Forum Addiction.

My life has become unmanageable, and I need help, bad.

I'm currently involving myself in my addiction right now

and there's a probable chance I'll relapse in the next 10

minutes. When I'm not working, I'm in plumbing forums.

I've moved my fridgerator, my bathroom, my pantry all

to within inches of reach from my keyboard. I've had to

use my wastebasket at times for "emergencies" but I'll

keep this thread sanitary. My gut used to hang over my

legs, now I'm worried that my gut is starting to hang

over my knees and I need help! I built A gratitude list

but I think I ate it. There are no steps in my program

so I guess I have to make amends, or start wearing

depends.

Please, share your addiction, let me know that I'm not

the only one spending 84 hours a week in forums hunt-

ing and gathering information, hoarding it like a squirrel.

Please participate in the poll to gain the much needed

help we all deserve.

LOL

Ya know it's bad when yer thinking of how to get a laptop in the truck with some kinda satelite access.

Duly noted, most of the plumbers I have come to know in these forums are sole props like myself, fantastic way to stay abreast of current stock, fixtures...just not code.
No better way to exchange notes & idea's, in the real world I only bump into my competitors at the supply.

Thats what I tell my wife at least....

when you can come here and vent about

bill collection, employee problems, customer problems ect ect....

that is good

also , its a good way to keep up with what is going on plumbing wise..

like all the pex pipe disasters and other issues.....

and its good place to be educated about things like

payroll resources for small business...inexpensive

what you
ought to have for a proper amount of insurance ect...

what is a good business program to have for book keeping..

and of course......

its better than just talking to myself all day long.

and I realize that I am not as squrrley as I thought I was...

Some perspective, guys - according to Nielsen, the average american watches more than 4 hours of TV a day.

I don't know about you guys, but I watch maybe 2 hours of TV a week.

So - our total Time Spent In Front Of a Screen (TSIFOAS) is probably close to the average person's.

My name is Redwood and everyone thinks I have a problem... I don't! I have a laptop in my truck and use Net Stumbler to "borrow" bandwidth from unsecured Wi-Fi connections. I never have to drive more than a 1/2 mile to get a good high speed connection! I surf between jobs!

Make sure you encript your wireless network or, you might wonder why people are parked in front of your house!

My rabid DIY forums addiction has gone very well with my insomnia ever since I got my first computer back in '98.
Been doing all kinds of DIYing for more than 50 years now, and I have spent untold midnight hours on various DIY sites...either as a newbie, a junior member, a senior member, a moderator and once even as a so-called "super moderator", whatever that was.
I currently have a total of more than 14,000 posts (for real) on various DIY sites (is THAT nuts or what), but I've drastically been tapering off, what with the senility setting in and all. It's getting harder to remember if the red or the black wires clamp to the copper water heater pipes for instance.
Everything slows down when you hit 65, which I just did, but NOW I'm on Medicare if I hurt myself again. LOL

Last month my brothers, uncles, aunts, daughters, sons, grandparents, neighbors, my parish priest and my ex-wife all showed up at my house with a camera crew from the show intervention. As they all sat in my living room surrounding me in a circle they began to express their concern for me and brought to my attention that I was in fact addicted to the internet and said they would all stand behind me if only I would check into the computer addiction rehab center. After much denial on my part but persistance on theirs, I began to weep and finally admitted that I was addicted to the internet. My priest called for prayer and as he laid his hand upon my forehead everyone else embraced me. I was led out the door and into a waiting van that had two large armed men inside to escort me to the rehab center. Well 60 days in the center for computer addiction made me come to my senses and I was cured! However during my time in rehab I met a group of wonderful women that visit me all the time at home on a regular basis. My neighbor sees all these women coming and going from my house and my sister now has called me asking what is going on over here. Do I now have to live in fear of another intervention because I will be considered to have an addiction to women? Geez, why cant I just be able to live my life the way I want to. I think that I should go back to my computers and all the forums to throw everyone off track? What do I do? What would you do?

Steve they would toss a bunch of us in one cave. We would need more than a T1 because a T1 is just a POP. We would need a T3.

12-29-2007, 08:03 AM
This morning, I'd settle for a T1. My internet connection is off and on and I never know if it will load a page or not. Since we got about a half-inch of snow, the cable system can't cope.

DSL with the upload for me. The one thing I hate is when I go to a slow web site. I have had one internet outage and that was a few years back.

edit
Is it a node problem or farther down the line.

I have just realised that I spend an awful lot of time on this forum. In the order of several hours each and every day.

Who's the most dedicated/crazy/addicted?

FloridaOrange
07-16-2009, 06:32 PM
I get on here quite a bit but then again I work on a computer with 2 monitors. Sometimes I'm waiting for an answer to the project I'm working on or some other similar reason.
I would say if it were clocked it would be a couple of hours a day but some of that time I'm not actually paying attention to that monitor.

Ian Gills
07-16-2009, 06:43 PM
Well, I'm still pretty impressed that you give this forum an ENTIRE MONITOR!

FloridaOrange
07-16-2009, 06:52 PM
Nothing but the best. :D
Seriously though, once you start using two monitors it's hard to go back to a single. Prices of monitors and vid cards have come down alot in the last couple of years.

Right now I'm watching a show on Hulu.com on the other monitor.

Peanut9199
07-17-2009, 12:07 PM
Never heard of Hulu.com.
I tried to watch something but it says because i'm not in the US i cannot download.

My question, how does it know?
When i set anything up on my computer i never put in personal history.

Does anyone know where to go to see that information?

Ian Gills
07-17-2009, 01:15 PM
It's looking at your IP address. That narrows you down to specific area where the server you are connected to is located.

You can get some software to hid your IP address. I wonder what would happen then?

FloridaOrange
07-17-2009, 01:30 PM
I was under the impression that it wasn't truely a "download", more like streaming. In any event I would be suprised that it wasn't available in Canada.

Like Ian said, it's reading your IP. Lots of sites do that so they can tailor advertising to your specific location.

I spend a lot of time here and on two other forums as well. I also run duel 24" monitors. It is true once you start running two screens its real hard to go back to one. I been doing the duel monitor ting for 6 years now. Its nice to have one screen up with research stuff while you are working on a proposal on the other. My current computer will let me do 4 screens but I lack the funds to buy 2 more.

If you do an a search, Rugged posted a thread, called, Computer Addiction, back in 07, similar to this one.

I just couldn't get them to merge.

I'm jealous Ron, I'm running 2 19" which was big enough until I started watching TV and movies.

Maybe, when Terry comes on, he will merge the 2, Rugged's has a poll on it.

Each one of Ron's monitors is bigger than my TV. He must get a tan sitting in front of that thing all day.

I have two tens in the back of my SUV though.

We can help. Here is a project to help stave off your preoccupation with the internet:

Go all around you house....check the screws on every switch plate cover and receptacle cover. Make a spread sheet showing whether the slots are horizontal or vertical. Post back with the results, and we will give you the further assignments.

Damn!!!!!!!!!!! That is a deal.
My 19's were from NewEgg for about $150 each (bought 3, 1 for the wife 2 for me).
Unless side work starts picking up for me I'll be staying with the 19's for some time. I've done 2 sidejobs this year so far, haven't been paid on either yet. Usually by this time I've done at least 20+.

Cass

Why not paid yet ??? Were they for family ?

Why not paid yet ??? Were they for family ?

I'll be paid on both soon hopefully but with the Architect ($300) job he always pays late. I make sure not to take too much on for him at once - my options are limited as I'm not an engineer, I do the plans and the architect signs and seals the plans. I can't put a lean on a project.

The other job is for someone I do alot of sidework with and I'm pretty good friends with. He never tells me what I'm getting paid but it is always more than I expect. That project went through a couple of changes and then had to wait on the architect to pay him.

Neither situations are ideal but given the current construction industry down here I can't complain (for sidework I was down $15K+ last year and probably $20K+ this year). All the work I do as side work I do at night, I don't count it as income until it is my account. In 4-5 years I've only been burned twice.

Thanks. In my (real) job the work has changed from 90% new construction to 95% remodel/tenant infill. We are working harder for a little less money.

I made a good decision to sell my mustang when I did, had I waited I would've gotten $5K less. I keep an eye out and tell my wife as soon as it's realistically possible I'll be picking up another one. I wish that was now, alot of people are having to get rid of toys - there's some really nice high power cars that can be had for $10-15K.

Cass, my friend, that is a pile full of fixins you got there! I don't know if I answered this ever, I spend about 8 hours to 10 hours a week, due to I take a break from working on the computer and come visit you guys and stir up yer blood, to keep you going, :) and of course, bless you with my plumber knowledge. :) I pop in and out, and only got one monitor because that is all I can basically handle, no dual monitors for this gal, I am a single monitor woman BUT, I work literally 7 days a week.
