Yesterday I put in a new hot water heater in my house. I went outside and turned off the gas line at the meter. after the job was finished I went outside and turned the line on. I heard a gush and then went back inside to re-lite the pilots. nothing will lite now. I can't hear any gas when trying the lite the appliances and I can't smell anything. I went out side and noticed the meter wasn't moving or making any noise. I shut off the line at the meter again, waited an hour, went back out and turned it on. this time no noise or anything, no indication gas was moving through.

suggestions?

First of all, you should have a gas shutoff very near to your HW tank.

When you say appliances, do you mean that your gas stove will not light either?

If that's the case, you need to call the gas company.

Call the gas company. Some of those valves require a special tool to turn the gas back on (I know mine does). You can see what needs to be done on my valve by looking at the opposite side - the slug that you turned to shut it off does not engage the body of the valve when trying to go back the other way - you need a tool to engage the pins on the back side. I made a tool to do it, but the gas company can get really nasty if they catch you doing it yourself. I've used it once, and a repairman did - he was happy since he didn't have to call the utility and sit around until they came. It can be unsafe, so best leave it to them. Especially if the valve hasn't been lubed or used for awhile, turning it can create a leak.

There could be other issues as well. Gas should not be looked at casually...too much at stake.
