has anyone used the flat hydronic radiant baseboard that looks like 1 x 5 wood baseboard? It seems to be aluminum with copper tubing fused to the back. AIM and Hydronic Alternatives, and probably others make it. I see very little info. on it and I was thinking of using it instead of standard slant-fin baseboard. I just don't know if its going to work here in New York with the cold winters we can get.

The specs will tell you the amount of heat it can disipate. Compare that per foot to what you have.

I would be concerned about increased loss of heat through the wall.

If the "baseboard" is against the wall in a way that increases the temperature of the wall material, that will increase the heat losses through the wall.

Also, a 5" high baseboard without fins is likely to have smaller area to develop convenction and transfer to the air than would be the case with the usual fin-tubes.

I would look carefully at the heat-transfer characteristics of the whole installation before I installed such a unit. You wouldn't want to spend the extra money on something that will do a better job of heating the outdoors.

Radiators

I just installed a couple of panel-style radiators. I was looking at doing a baseboard installation, but decided on the panels. They look quite nice, and they work like a dream. "Dia-norm" is the brand, but they are similar to the low-end Runtal, Radson, etc... I suspect they are all made at the same factory in Europe.

If you can sweat the pipes, they are a pretty nice finished look.
