Hello,
I recently had a plumber come out to see why my toilets won't flush properly and drains gurgle. He told me my vent stack was clogged and to give it 5 days to clear but to call him if after this time the troubles persisted. He said he could unclog the stack or put AAVs on the sinks in both my upstairs and downstairs bathrooms. I found the Studor Mini-Vent for $23.00 and thinking of doing it myself. Should I? and if so do I need an AAV under BOTH sinks? Your advice would be much appreciated.
Thank you

Hmmm, unclog the stack or add a component to the system?

My answer would be to unclog the stack.

Sometimes adding a component to replace the function of a failed component is a good idea. In this case, the traps in the toilets would still be exposed to venting problems so the correct answer is to unclog. At least that's how I see it.

I would unclog the main vent. I would also have him cable the main drain. I have never seen anything clear its self after five days. Why use mechanical items that will fail when the non mechanical way will last longer and will not cost you as much.

Thank you both for such quick responses. I will take your advice and call him back out...any idea of what it may cost? I didn't ask him when he was here...thank you again

any idea of what it may cost?

I could not guess what the price should be. He might not want to or can do that type of job. That could be why he wanted to install the AAV's.
I'm sure whom ever does it the price will depend on how high the roof is and such. Good Luck to you.

Ask the plumber when you call him. He's been on location so he should be able to give a fairly good estimate. Maybe also call around a bit to check pricing. Some of the dedicated "roto-rooter" types may give flat pricing and guarantee their work (come back for no fee).

I would never ever use them. Oh ya I'm in direct competition with that foul Co.. Call any other Co. that does drains and you will get a better price.

I have been using this plumber for many years and he's always done a great job for a decent price so I will call him today, he didn't charge me when he came out the other day...thank you both again for the advice
