After getting a new washing machine, we were getting a horrible pipe banging when the water intake turned on/off quickly. I installed water hammer arrestors on the faucets that the washing machine is connected to, which stopped the banging.

However, now after a couple of months, when the washing machine starts up, there is a loud squealing when it initially takes in water. I'm assuming it is related to the water hammer arrestors, but I'm not sure. Any ideas on how to address this problem would be appreciated.

What is your static water pressure in your home?

Correct water pressure removes the need for water hammer arrestors, they are designed to fix a symptom, not the core problem.

The piston type can make noises as you state.
