New to this forum and happy I found it! We purchased and remodeled a 30 yr. old home in 2000. We replaced the master bathroom toilet with an American Standard (maybe $200+ can't remember). I don't even know the model number. It is on our highest floor. We've never had a problem and get a clog maybe once a year. My husband is a big toilet tissue user. No children.

In our basement we replaced an old one with a Mansfield toilet that ran about $60+. Again, don't know the model but the cheapest I could find since it was for the basement. Of course now I've learned more about toilets! :)We now have a game area set up down there and it gets a lot of traffic with our family/friends. The toilet is a slow flusher and we always have to hold the handle down for the larger deposits so it doesn't clog. We want to replace this toilet with a good strong toilet with a GREAT flush. It gets a lot of use. I'm not too sure we're concerned about noise as it's in the basement. We just want something that flushes extremely well. We're tired of the clogs and barely flushing away the waste. We call it a two flusher because it takes 2 flushes sometimes when you have a larger amount of waste.

Our two other toilets are on the main floor and they are 30 yr. old Kohler models (?) that we didn't replace. Should have. We've replaced the guts of both toilets but again, they are what we call two flushers (slow to flush, have to hold the handle down forever and sometimes doesn't take it all away on first flush).

The first thing we want to do is replace the basement toilet as our test model. If we like it, then we're going to do the other two I just talked about. I've started researching and have narrowed it down to 3 models. This is based on this website and another consumer site we use. We're looking at the Eljer Titan 091-0777, the American Standard Champion and the Gerber 21-312. We've never owned a toilet with a pressure assisted flush system before and are concerned that it is extremely noisy and not sure how easy it is to repair if it has a problem? Like I said earlier, we are not too concerned about the noise because we'd rather have one that flushes GREAT but at the same time we don't want the roof raising off the house and scaring the dog. :)

My husband will be installing the toilet himself and doing any repairs on it. He thinks he's a plumber but he's not. I'd rather have it done but that's not an option.

I have been reading many of the opinions on this site and I appreciate them. I read that some people don't like the pressure assisted toilets because they leave pieces of toilet paper behind and you have to flush again. Our purpose is to get rid of our two flushers. :) If anyone can give us an opinion on the ranking of these 3 toilets I mentioned and which one you would put in your home over the other two, we would appreciate it. The Eljer Titan and American Standard would both be easier to obtain where we live and I could have them purchased tomorrow and my husband is free to install this weekend.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read and respond to my post. All help would be much appreciated for this confused homeowner!

I would suggest you go to Terry's report on low-flow toilets linked from the home page of this forum. In my opinion, you do not need or want a pressure assisted toilet. Terry is a proponent of the Toto line, and for good reason. These are 21st century toilets. Many of the original low-flows had clogging problems because the manufactures tried to use their old models with less water. Now the leading companies use computer designed trap ways that do a remarkable job of flushing with low volumes of water. Toto makes a number of excellent toilets with designs that will fit virtually any decor requirements. The Drake model seems to be a big favorite, but any model will perform well. I recently install a Dartmouth model and it is fantastic! If you choose a different brand, you need to be careful about which model you get as not all models within a brand perform well. Do yourselves a big favor and DO NOT buy a toilet for any of the Big Box stores. These are cheap units that are prone to problems. They are often bought by builders to put in new homes and end up being replaced soon after the home is sold.

I agree with Gary. Spend a little more and go with Toto.

I just put in a Soiree in our powder room and it works great. It, like the Guinevere, has a new type of bowl wash which really keeps it clean.

Also, do get the "CEFIONTECT" feature which also helps keep the bowl clean.

I love my 2 Toto Drakes, but the later reviews of the AS Champion 4 are positive (see the "Champion Review" thread). We replaced an older AS PA toilet -- it scared people, but it would flush a bowling ball -- but the main reason for replacing it was we wanted ADA height and elongated bowl.
