One of my 3 toilets has suddenly started to do what I can only describe as hiccupping. A number of times a day it seems to suck down some of the water in the bowl, quickly 2 times in a row. The tank refills it immediately. It sounds like a huge double hiccup. What gives? The house/toilet are 9 years old, on a septic system, system thoroughly cleaned 2 years ago. Could the stack be clogged? This toilet is the nearest one to the stack. No sewer smell. Thanks!

The same thing happened to me just a few months ago... made quite a mess when the septic backed up into my house.

My house is a split-level (looks like a raised ranch) with a bathroom on both floors. The septic lines exit out the bottom of the house, to the septic tank, then to a lift station which pumps out to a distribution box to the field lines. The line between the lift station and the dist box got clogged, and therefore the septic could not drain.

I had the line repaired, then a few months after that the lift pump went. Same thing, toilet started hiccuping, then a few days later the septic backed up again.

I learned my lesson to not ignore a hiccuping toilet.
