Amer Stand won't flush

My American standard toilet will not fully flush which is embarrasing since it is in our powder room. We have had the toilet 2 years and it never did work. There is no suction sound. Toilet will flush if we dump a pot of water into the bowl or reflush several times. THanks Carol.

We would need to know the model, and a little more about what happens when you flush it.

Take the lid off the tank before you flush.

Is the tank full of water?
How much water leaves the tank when you flush?
