Water Heater Modification

I came across the following site awhile back. I just picked up a new Rheem 50 gallon electric and will be doing a complete tear out and redo on our current plumbing and before I install the new softener and heater I figured I would check opinions on this kit before I did anything. Do you guys think it's worth it? Have any of you done the additional anode rod?

Anode Rods....

It is best to leave well enough alone...

Those guy are probably right to an extent but

it might be better to wait about 4 years and change the one that is presently in there..

In our area sometimes extra rods can make the
water smell funny

they have mag roda and they have Alliminum rods too
depending on your water in your region

I suppose you can try it for an experiment and
in twenty years give everyone your findings..

The second anode sounds like a good idea -- their prices seem a little high -- and maybe that curved tube would improve flushing. After reading much of the information at that site, I have just ordered a replacement anode for my water heater. I had pulled it out a few months ago while trying to get rid of some sulfur odor, but now it looks like leaving it out altogether was not such a good idea.

sulfer odor is from the rod

Try an Alliminum rod if you have the odor....

the Mag rod will just stink things up again

that site is pretty good but they are in
the business of selling those things too..

lots of times we just take them out and dont replace
them at all becasue of the age of the heater and the
smell that always returns...

its your choice , but they are made to last about
10- 15 years whatever you do

You can google anode roda and get one for about 15 bucks with a dialectric
nipple too... the problem is having the port on the hheater to insert the
extra rod into...

Many of the newer heaters already have a "self cleaning" dip tube that is superior to that one, especially at the lower flows of the new faucets. The second anode rod may have value, but why buy the rest of the items at premium prices when you can get them separately cheaper.

Thanks for the info guys. I wouldn've bothered with it but we got our Rheem for $53 (annual REMC co-op member meeting) so I figured I would've spent another $200 at least on the Rheem so if this was worth it I'd go for it. Sounds like I should pass it up. I will look into just a second rod though.
