Valve Cartridge Question

I’m replacing a cartridge (Newport Brass 1-028) and have a question.

Diagram on page 3:

Background:
I closed the valve by turning the cartridge stem clock wise until it stopped without forcing.

When I placed the mechanical stop on the valve stem, it didn’t line up with the stop block so I turned the stem counter clock wise until the mechanical stop went on. I didn’t want the stem turning further clock wise and break the cartridge.

The valve leaked (drop of water every minute). I took the mechanical stop off and turned it around and reinstalled. This slowed the drip down to a small wet spot on a paper towel overnight.

Question (finally):
If I install the mechanical stop with the smallest gap next to the stop block, will it hurt the cartridge when I close the valve?

Thanks,
Roy
