Hello guys,

I hope i did drop this question in right spot,..

i will cut to the chase for a min i was working on my comuster place to work on both electrical and also replace the really funky sink facuet set up and i have one question to ask ya about water heater expanding tank do they allow to use it on the hot water side ??

I am not too famuair with the plumming codes but if some of you guys can fill me in on this matter i will be happy to hear your reply

of course you will tell me about the boiler with expaning tank yeah i know that one lol ,,, but how often i will run into this one with reguar water heater unit ??

btw this is a 40 gallon gaz waterheater with power vent on it

this place formally did used well water then switch over to city water few years back so i dont know where it stand on this part

No...the expansion tank must be installed on the cold side only.

It can be anywhere on the cold side but most often is installed above the water heater.
 
It will work on the hot side, but it will not last anywhere near as long as it should. From the check valve throughout the system, the pressure would be the same which is why it works. A bad part is that when you do open a hot faucet, you'll not only get the hot water from the supply, but the water that accumulated in the tank and cooled off making it tough to get the temperature you want. All of the manufacturers specifiy installation on the supply (cold) side for good reasons.
