Okay,

So I currently have a cheap stainless steel sink with two drains, one with a garbage disposal which has the dishwasher hooked up to it and then the main line from the 1st drain. The 2nd drain goes into the garbage disposal and then runs into the main line.

My question is how to I turn this into a one drain sink and still keep the garbage disposal and dishwasher hooked up to it? Is that still possible or not? I want to make sure before I go and buy this sink that the wife wants me to buy and install.

I did not know if it was okay to have just a one drain sink and have that all hooked up. Can anyone help with advice in if this can be done, and if so, how to do it?

Thanks!!
Jeremy

It is very common to have the dishwasher running into the garbage disposer, then that the sole output to the drain. I'm not sure I follow what you have now, but making it simpler with only the one sink and GD with DW hooked in is fine. Maybe, if you have something weird, it would be best to post a picture of it.

I assume you mean you want to go from a double bowl sink to a single bowl. It's a simple matter to convert the plumbing underneath. As JAD said, the dishwasher drain will connect to the garbage disposal (after the knock-out plug is removed).

Their is one thing to check which I've seen in this situation before. Usually a double sink like that has one sink higher then the other. If this isn't your case this doesn't pertain to you. If the sink the disposal is on is higher you need to make sure that once you put the disposal on your lower sink the discharge is not lower then waste line coming out of the wall.

Yes, I have a double bowl sink. Sorry not using the correct terminology, but I am new at this household stuff and figuring it out on the go. But yes, we want to get a single bowl sink. And I didnt know if you can connect the garbage disposal to just a one bowl sink.

So basically I would just attach the garbage disposal with the dishwasher already attached to it, to the one bowl and that would empty into the main line out. Correct?

Yup, so long as the discharge of the disposal is not below the drain coming out of the wall.

Thank you I appreciate your quick responses!! Hopefully I dont have any problems with the installation!!

Not exactly. Connecting the dishwasher drain to the G/D should be done last and done properly. You can buy an air gap and hook it up through the air gap, which sits on top of your sink, or you must high-loop the drain hose under the sink before connecting it to the G/D.

I was assuming he had the extra slack. Every dishwasher I've seen has the drain line run up high on the back of the unit then it comes back down. Doesn't that eliminate the need for a loop under the sink?

No, and it doesn't eliminate the CODE MANDATE for an air gap, in SOME areas. California plumbing code requires it. Not every state does. Check locally.
