This is my first posting here. I just reviewed some of the threads, and there seems to be some very useful info here!

Anyway, I recently bought a new Kohler white cast iron/enamel sink, a Moen white spray head faucet, and will be starting a small remodel of my kitchen this week. I realized that I better hurry up and get the sink strainer/baskets, so went to Lowes and Home Depot today and started looking for a strainer.

There is a nice one from Kohler, but it is $35 apiece, and the package seems pretty heavy.

The guys in the plumbing dept at both stores said there is no functional difference, the Kohler is made of better material, but that is about it. I found a "Leakproof Turn 2 Seal Strainer" for about $13, and it seems similar to one I have in my existing sink. I like that it makes a leakproof seal with a turn of the center piece.

However, before I buy, I started searching on the internet to see if there is some compelling reason to buy a more expensive strainer.

Is there anything I should know or think about before buying a strainer? Is it worth the extra money to buy the Kohler one, or one of the other heavier $30 strainers?

Thanks in advance for the help!!

One thing I don't recommend are strainers and disposer flanges which are painted to match the sink. Mine just didn't last, esp. if you use any even mildly abrasive cleaner.

I put in a strainer which I don't recall the brand, other than it was NOT Kohler or one of the other recognizable residential brands. It has a t-shaped handle and takes nearly a full turn to screw it down to the basket. The nice thing is that it closes off that side of a double sink, so if you use a plunger on the other side, you don't have to hold something over that drain.

Thanks for the replies! My existing sink has one strainer that has the T-handle that you can tighten, and it seems to work really well. I have never changed out a sink before, and just wanted to be sure I didn't buy a piece of junk, or over spend and still get junk!

I hope the Kohler sink is good....I like the shape, and I have read else where that they seem to be good quality. I bought a Moen sprayer-head type faucet....the guy at Lowes said that Moen was the brand with the least returns....
