I'm replacing the p trap in a kitchen drain in a house built in the late 1970's. The existing drain pipe is labled PVC but is tan in color. My new p trap threads are different from the exiting pipe...are/were there 2 types of PVC made ?? Thanks!!

It's just a product design for whoever made it.
It's best to replace the entire trap assembly so that everything matches up without problem.
If it is tubular, then the threads are standard. If it is an IPS trap with a big "locknut' joining the two pieces, then that is proprietary, and it will be whatever thread the manufacturer wanted to use.
