While working on some guy's deck, the water department pulls up and says we have a large leak near the water meter. Trouble is, a 2 ton pillar is in the way. Seems that the pillar had moved off its footing during the recent rains and was pushing the meter can into the swivel meter coupling nut, ripping a hole in it.

After long debate about who's responsibility this was, the water guy ended up notching out the bottom of the can with a sawzall and replacing the nut. The pillar still needs to be moved back or gotten rid of altogether.

Any ideas? We're thinking about digging it up a little, tying a chain around it and pulling it down.

Have to ask...

Is this pillar holding up a front porch or something?Maybe it's the picture but doesn't look like much of a footing under that "2 ton" pillar. If it's sliding off its footing and it's needed to support part of the structure you got a little work ahead of you.Like to see a picture of it farther back to get abetter idea of what your up against.

It's about 6 feet high and used to be attached to a stone wall before it broke away. 2 tons may be an exaggeration, but it's damn heavy, and I wouldn't want it falling on anyone.

The water dept. says there needs to be a foot clearance around the can, so it's gonna have to go. The argument is whether the pillar was there first and they put that meter too close to it.

RE: interesting jobs: I only post the interesting ones. Most of the stuff I do is pretty mundane.

get rid of it

removing the piller I think would be the best way to go.jackhammer, sledge
hammers ect.

pillar rmoval

Wrap a chain around that sucker and drag it out with the truck!!It could be alot of fun, scaring the owner, amusing the neighbors,P***ing off the water company. These oppurtunities don't come along everyday you know...(lol)

BTW Eric, got lucky, the hurricane didn't slam us here in Hawaii, but got a little damage on the 2 houses i'm finishing from the 5.4 earthquake.(it was less than 20 miles from the houses!!)
