Folks,

I'm nearly finished my basement bathroom rough in. The last thing( I hope!) is the rough in for the tub (was never a tub there). What i've done so far is run a 2" drain to the edge of a hole 12"x12"x12" . Do I hook up a 1 1/2" 'p' trap to my 2" drain now or do I wait until I get the tub?. I'm planning on a standard size tub (if there is one). I'm concerned about the exact placement of the 'p' trap to take the tub drain, any tips?

Thanks for looking and hopefully you can help me out.

Your tub will use a 1.5" drain, so since you roughed in for a 2" drain, you may as well use a 2" p-trap and adapt to the tub drain with a reducing coupling or right at the p-trap with a bushing. And yes you do have to wait to install the p-trap...you can't use a union p-trap (atleast not where I am) in a closed off area like underneath a tub. I suggest you plan what you are doing because plumbing a tub drain in reverse is not a task for the inexperienced.

There doesn't appear to be any real standard for drain location for a tub, so wait until you buy the tub to make the final connection.

I'd like to know how well it drains once you put it in.
Usually a tub is 1-1/2", showers are 2" because they are a flat bottom fixture with no basin....the drain MUST keep up with the showers 2.5 gpm flow.
I like the idea of a 2" drain on the tub...tell us once it's done.

You mean you do not run EVERY tub drain in 2"? I do.
