I had a plumber come in today to look at a leak in our shower. He believes that the leak is from the shower faucet, to investigate will be $400. If he is correct he recommends that we change out the faucet at a cost of $600 for a basic faucet and shower head which is including the installation. He tells me that he can supply a faucet from Moen and eventhough it looks the same as the one I can buy at the hardware store, what he gets supplied has the same exterior but the guts of the faucet is more to a professional standard, not just "builders grade". Is is being truthfull or is he full of it? Thanks

If the faucet is leaking, it may be as simple as replacing a washer or a cartridge.

Where is it leaking and what kind of faucet is it?

The price is pretty run of the mill.
The parts, well ask HD and they'll tell you it's the same thing you get at a supply house, ask a supply house and they tell you it's better.
Call Moen and they'll deny anything that could cause a stir (or maybe they'll truthfully say it's the same...who knows)
Bottom line, you can get the valve yourself, but when I price a valve replacement it comes to about the same if you buy it yourself, which is roughly what he quoted you.
I WILL say this though...IF my customers insist on purchasing the fixture, I tell them that if the product turns out to be defective, I don't do a second replacement for free. ( had a few bad experiences with customers buying cheap floor models or reconditioned sale items, I only stand by a product I procure)

Oh, that too.
Moen cartridges are very easy to replace, unless it's outdated or in bad shape.

faucet

I cannot imagine why it would cost $400.00 just to check for a leak, and he has it backwards. The Moen internals are all the same, the difference, if any and that is subject to debate (I think there is), is in the externals and possibly quality control. I think you need a different plumber.
