non submersible pump problems

We live in an older home with a non submersible pump. I've read discussion about submersible pumps, but not the kind we have.

We noticed today that our pump is continously running and we have no leaks in the house, no open faucets inside or out, etc.

Any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how we go on to troubleshoot? We purchased a new pump a couple of years ago, when we were having some electrical issues, turned out the fix didn't need a new pump, so we never installed it.

Going to replace the pump tomorrow, since we have it, but if that doesn't work - any ideas?

Thanks

I wouldn't replace the pump. It's a lot easier for someone who knows what they are doing to troubleshoot before the homeowner adds problems to the situation. I'm not discouraging you from trying to do the DIY thing, it's just that when someone changes a part (in your case a pump) without knowing why, it tells me they should call in a pro.

Sounds like you might have a hole in one of your pipes in the well. If there is a hole in one of those it can cause the pump to run because the water is running back in the well. I would pull out the pipes and check that out or better yet as someone said earlier just have someone do it if you are not sure of what to look for.

Decided not to replace the pump ourselves having someone come out and do it on Monday AM, he also said that it probably was not the pump, but he would install the one we have and then go on to troubleshoot the problem, if that didn't fix it. Thanks for your imput
