Bathtub drain woes

Hello out there. Our bathtub drain is disconnected. how can I reconnect the pop up drain to the controls. The drain will not move up or down. It has come loose of the assemblage.

Most popup tub drains do not "connect", if the pop up is in the bottom of the tub. There were a few that connected, but those cannot disconnect.
