I am converting my old shower/bath drain to shower only(1.5 " to 2") I have re piped to the waste drain and I am in the process of laying out the drain position for the shower. My question is that I want to try to utilize the original void( about the size of a 5 gal. bucket) but that wont position my drain far enough from the wall to lay the backer board, tile etc. Will it drain properly if I use elbows to redirect the drain to a more center position. in essence the water going down the drain will have to do a "loop da loop" prior to entering the p trap ... thanks in advance

What is the pipe type? You could use a coupler and some more pipe to get the p-trap into a better position, or use a 1/16, 1/12 or 1/8 bend on the horizontal part to help out position. a 1/16, 1/12, or 1/8 (aka 45°, 30° and 22.5°) make almost no difference when snaking. But as always, the less bends the better.

This forum is good for plumbing specific problems, but www.johnbridge.com specializes in tile stuff, a big part is showers. Get some good advice there on a problem free, long-term satisfaction construction.

two alternatives

an elbow needs a lot of vertical space all by itself. So that wouldn't work; it would force you to install the P trap too low down for it to be able to connect to where it used to connect to. The only conclusions are these two: build a shower with a slope to the drain where it is now, or move the drain to the center of the shower floor layout no matter how much work it is.

The second alternative is obvious, everyone thinks of it, and thousands of people will advise you on how to do it.

The first option is worth considering when you are building a custom shower. You could make an original design with a shower bench positioned over the drain near the wall, and slope a completely flat floor to a trench in which you slope the water that collects there to the drain in the middle of the trench. A long drain channel under the bench. Very designer. Very expensive looking. Not any more expensive than any other custom tile shower floor.
