I'm replacing an old leaking shutoff valve with a ball valve. Its located overhead in the basement, I would like to install it upside down so that the handle faces downward. Its in between joists so its a lot easer to close this way.

Is there any rule concerning shutoff valve orientation?

Put it where you can reach it, and it doesn't get blocked by something when you try to use it...
