We are having the bathroom in our old house remodeled. We asked the contractor to install a new Toto toilet in a different location in the bathroom. He said it would be no problem. But now it's installed and is six inches (!) away from the wall. It looks terrible, but he says there's nothing that can be done about it because of something do with the floor joists. While it seems clear that he screwed up, I guess the bigger question is what, if anything, can be done about this now? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I simply don't know enough to know whether this guy's just trying to avoid the cost of repairing the problem.

Sorry for the duplication, but I also posted this question in the Remodeling and Toilets forums.

Thanks!

A floor joist could be the problem. He could of messed up.

A fairly cheap fix would be to put up a 2x4 wall up agonist the wall. I don’t know why he would not have told you about this before he did that.

There's a limit on how big of a hole you can put in a joist to move a drain line, and a toilet needs a pretty substantial hole. The common solution to this is to build a chase or dropped ceiling underneath to accommodate the lowered drain line so it runs underneath the joists, rather than through them. This may be really unworkable, depending on the room layout and the ceiling height on the floor below. A 14" rough-in toilet (assuming they used a normal 12" one) would move it back two inches, but that may not be enough to improve things enough to justify the costs.
