I have a natural gas pipe that I am trying to cap off behind the stove since I have an electric stove.

I have tried a 1/2 cap and I have also tried a 5/8 cap. The 1/2 is way too small and the 5/8 is just barely too big. Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance

thanks for the reply

I took some picutres so you can see.
Im pretty sure Im using a flare adapter for a flare at the end of the pipe

what do you think? am i missing something?

Using 2 wrenches, unscrew the flare adapter out of the gas cock and screw in a 1/2" black pipe plug. Use either teflon tape or dope.

NPT (National Pipe Thread) fittings and flare fittings do not fit each other, and your second picture is of a flare-to-pipe adapter similar to the flare-to-pipe adapter already screwed into your valve. A right-sized flare cap like the one on the adapter in your second picture should screw onto the adapter already in your valve -- my own preference -- but removing that adapter from your valve and installing a NPT plug like Kordts said could also work.
