View Full Version : New sink, slow drain

Hi, everybody:
Sorry if this has been covered already, but here's the problem.
During the kitchen remodel, a new sink was installed which is 11 inches deep (the old sink was 7.5 inches deep).
Also a new disposer was installed, whose drain is a good 3" lower than the old disposer.
Now water drains extremely slowly (or not at all) from the sink.
Does it mean that the drain that goes into the wall needs to be lowered?
By how much? What should be the height difference between the disposer drain and the drain pipe that goes into wall? Right now it's about 1-2" (the disposer drain is higher), but the draining is terrible.
PS - there is a trap installed.
Thanks

Water doesn't flow uphill...so, if the arm going into the wall goes up out of the trap, you need to lower the connection in the wall. The only up after the trap is the elbow that attaches to it...it must all be downhill from that point.

The pipe going into the wall is at a 90-degree angle to the wall, and is 1-2" LOWER than the disposer drain hole. The trap is between the disposer drain hole and the arm going into the wall.
Still, draining is painfully slow.
The guy who installed the disposer said that the pipe in the wall must be moved LOWER, so that the height differential between it and the disposer drain hole is LARGER than the current 1-2".
Does that make sense?
I never had draining problems before; once a new, deeper sink and new disposer were installed, all of a sudden draining is extremely slow.

There may not be a vent for that drain. Sounds like it should work. Disposers, especially when new, have the rubber flap at the top that can restrict water and air a little. Does it drain well if you run the disposer? Doing that acts somewhat like a pump. You could post a picture, that might help, but it sounds like it is not the sink installation.

i'll bet it is the disposer, not the sink being lower.
Two things are new, as you pointed out, Woytek. Just for fun, reinstall the old disposer and see how well the sink drains.
Try this: fill the sink up with a lot of water, let the water out and see how well it drains.
Other threads here have discussed Vessel sinks in bathrooms being slow to drain.

Hopefully they will be helpful in diagnosing the issue.
