The GE-Zenon filter mentioned in another thread is a solution for a large portion of the filtration needs that people post about. Filtration to .04 microns, whole house, auto back flush, long life membrane. Pricey.
If I were in a position to set up a filtration company I suspect I could make a very large amount of money with these things.
I have one of these. I have not mentioned the filtration characteristics on various posts because everyone was quite sure something like this did not exist. And they were almost impossible to buy in the US. Matag bought the exclusive NA distribution rights and intended to sell them through Matag stores. In my opinion one of the more idiotic decision recently of a major corp management. Would you go to, or even think to look at, the Matag store for filter systems? And, they were only sold in a few places that either ignored inquiries for a sale or couldn't sell because their state had a rule that they could not sell appliances to out of state customers. The agreement prohibited Zenon from even disclosing information.
To have a warranty it must be installed by an "approved" installer. You need a test system to check membrane integrity and flow. Expensive but simple. You could not even get the installation manual as a civilian.
I would expect GE to be better able to market these things. Some of you guys with on line businesses ought to talk to them about selling them. Installation is easy. In, out, drain. A small controller for auto flushing. Everything in the box. See about renting or providing free (with a deposit for damage/no return) the test system to home owners or local plumbers. Sort of like buying a firearm through the mandatory FFL holder. Testing is simple.
Qualification ought to be pretty much the ability to read and push a button.
They come with a carbon prefilter or a SS screen for chunky water.
No maintenance except a yearly test with the tester to check membrane integrity and performance. You can monitor performance easily with two pressure gages on the test fittings provided on the in and out connections.
Membrane integrity is very important if you are actually filtering water contaminated with nasty bugs. But since you don't change the media regularly there is little danger that you get from ordinary filters when you change media. When you do go in and do something, a simple chlorine dose cleans things up.
I had a serious problem with a highly reflective clay that is less than a half micron. Some of you might remember posts about that. Like magic! I could find no other solution.
