I'm not running any water in the house at all but every 3 minutes or so, I hear these short machine gun sounds coming from the piping in our basement. What could this be and how do I fix it? Thanks

Do you have a pressure reduction valve? If so, do you have an expansion tank? Try shutting off the supply valves to your toilets and see if it stops. If it does, turn them back on one at a time to isolate which one is causing the problems, then replace it.

If it is the prv, it may need to be replaced. The expansion tank may have a blown bladder. Any discharge from the T&P valve on the water heater?

Pick up a pressure gauge and see what your house pressure is when this happens. See if it is going up, then when it makes the sound, it drops back down.

chattering sounds

It could be the PRV valve if you hav eone, just turn it up or
down a little and it might go away

If you have a sump pump in the basement

see if the check valve is chattering when it comes on and off....
after one runs , sometimes the water will slowly seep back through
the check valve andmake this chattering noise

also check your toilets to see if one of the toilet valves is
chattering too.... the ballcock inthe toilet can actually sound like
a jackhammer if it really gets to vibrateing....
