Pool Drain

Does anyone know how to set the float valve to take some water from the bottom drain? I have a little sand collection at the bottom of the pool that i would like to just push by the drain and hae it sucked into the filter. If i close the valve completly, it just pulls in almost nothing so i'm not sure exactly how to set it. Thanks in advance.
