Fixing Symmons Model A

I discovered water coming out from under the wall plate of my shower/tub system. When I opened it up, I found the water was coming out of the hole the diverter spindle goes into. Can somebody tell me what is going on? I assume the little diverter valve that does in this hole is defective. How do I get it out? Any advice welcome.

there are o rings on the diverter.. you can change it but you need a symmons tool to remove it.
