Clamping Range of 2" FERNCO

I have cut off an old cast iron tub drain trap along a straight run of 2" cast pipe. I thought the OD would match up with PVC but the CI pipe OD is about 1/4" smaller than the PVC OD.

Will a standard 2" FERNCO clamp down to the smaller OD of the cast pipe or is there a better method for making this connection?

There are different "grades" of cast iron and that is to blame for that difference.


Hopefully someone else will chime in with a remedy as I don't have an answer to that situation.


I usually find this out as I'm cranking down the mission no-hub coupling and it distorts the stainless band badly. Doesn't look good at all even though it is water tight.

A shielded coupling made specifically for the transition from one piping material to another is what you need. You should be able to find Proflex couplings or the equivalent at a plumbing supply house.
