I have to thread a PVC into a brass fitting for my main to RPR valve should I use tape and putty or one or the other I was told to tape the PVC threads (male) and putty the inside of the brass fiting(female).

Thanks

You never use dope inside a fitting, the threads will push it right out into the tubing and things down stream.

Only use one or the other and don't use dope not meant for PVC.

What would happen if you did use the wrong dope? Not seal very good?

Melts the plastic.

By the way, the most common cause of leaks involving plastic threads is OVER-tightening. The manufacturer calls for hand tight plus about one turn by wrench. The lubrication provided by tape or dope makes it deceptively easy to overtighten.
