Sump Pump Gurgling Sound

Hi.

I have a sump pump and backup sump pump in the same pit. The contraption works fine. However, When the pump shuts off I hear a loud gurgling sound, which I think is the sound of the water rushing back down the entire length of the pipe. (The outlet is near the ceiling in my basement, so it is about 8ft) My fiancee thought that there was a tiger in my basement!

I was thinking of installing a valve somewhere near the top of the pipe to reduce the "gurgling" noise.

What would y'all suggest I do?

A check valve at the pump or near the pump would solve the problem.

Valve

I already have 1 valve between the sump and the backup sump. The backup is above the main pump.

Are you saying put a valve above the backup pump? (ie- slightly above the pit?)

So you have both pumps plumbed up the same line? And only one check valve? What keeps one pump from pumping thru the other pump?

One valve

Yep- Both are connected to the same pipe, but there is a valve in between.
I installed it exactly the way the instructions described, and it works.

It seems like the gurgling sound happens when the last of the water doesn't quite get out of the house, and the sump shuts off. Then, the water falls back down the pipe. That's why I thought perhaps installing a valve near the ceiling would help.

Pic

Here is a pic of what I described.

The pipe is about 8ft long, and the sump shuts off before all of the water gets out of the house.

Without knowing the make of your backup unit, I think you need a second CV above your backup unit to prevent backflow out of the backup pump. I would install a new CV just above the pit. Putting a CV at the top of the pipe won't meet your expectation because the last amounts of water being pumped before shutoff will not reach that 8ft. point.

As stated by Rancher, there is still a question as to whether water being pumped upward by the primary is pushing it through the backup pump unit above.

Maybe I should have said what keeps the main pump from pumping out the secondary pump, unless you have a sump pump with an integral CV.

I am not a sump pump expert, but the cheap sump pumps I've used do not have an integral CV.

Good Question

I'll have to check the features of the backup sump pump. I'm not sure how/if it takes care of water from the pump below.

At this point, I just followed the installation instructions. Then again, I've seen instructions that turned out to be pure fiction in the past! ;)

Valve

There is a second check valve leading into the backup sump. It came with the package.

Then if the gurgling noise you hear is the water rushing back down from the 8' level, your check valve on the back-up pum is not working.
