Bathtub drain

How do you replace the stopper drain assembly? The old one has lost all surface coating and looks horrible. Do you have to have access to the bottom of the tub?

Any help would be GREAT!

The drain flange unscrews from the top. If there is a "cross" intact inside it, there is a little tool that will grab this and turn it. If that is missing or breaks, then you have to be more creative;
