I'm in the market for a chop saw, anyone have any they like or dislike? I'll be using it primarily for PVC and copper pipe. Residential work only.

If you want to spend money and get a really good one go for the best brands... DeWalt, Makita, etc. My kids gave me a cheap one for Christmas a few years ago..BenchTop or some such brand and it has done so good that I'm still using it and have not even thought of buying a high dollar one to replace it. It has even done really good on precision work and I've used it on lots of trim. When I replace it I'll go for a DeWalt..then I'll have to hire an armed guard to keep it from getting stolen.

I haven't looked at current models but I have always had good luck with Makita miter saws. I would avoid getting a slider if it is primarily used on pipe. If the person isn't careful, sliding saws can be dangerous with pipe.

For this kind of work, why don't you check Harbor Freight? These may not be what you would want if you were doing custom cabinet work, but for cutting pipe and DIY trim work they will work just as well as the more expensive brands. Actually, I've used a Chicago SCMS for 6 years to miter trim and for use as acut off saw and it has been well worth the $125 I paid for it.

I got a cheap Craftsman from a guy moving to Florida for just $20 and it works great for pipe and material up to 5.5" wide. I mounted it on a piece of plywood that extends it about 30", and put a support and a stop for the right angle out near the end. It makes it very easy to quickly set a piece in the right position for cutting.

thanks

I'm a firm believer in quality power tools, which are getting harder to find. I was just seeing what everone else used. Bob's setup is exactly was what i had in mind.

Thanks
