Installed vessel sink with grid type drain. Sloooooow drain. Have read to replace this type of drain with mushroom type. Has anyone had any success here to help speed up the draining?
Most of the grid type drains I have seen were slower due to the grid. Most times grids are used on ADA sinks. Switching to a pop up will speed things up. You could try drilling the holes larger but I think it will make a mess of the grid and if you do, try don't do it with the grid in the sink.
Your problem is that a vessel sink does not have an overflow tube to let the air in the drain riser escape, so it has to try to rise throught the small holes against the water pressure, and that happens slowly. You need a pull-up drain for a sink without an overflow. If the pop-up does not lift high enough it will still not drain rapidly at first but it will once the air can escape.
As usual, hj is right. When confronting this situation, I use a Kohler K-7725 non-overflow lavy drain. The lifting mechanism is such that, in the open position, plenty of air can escape as the water drains. Most other lift and turn drains don't lift high enough for this to occur. The trick is getting the local supply houses to stock both the K7725 and the K7710 in all the available finishes so they can be available in real time.
Mount the drain before you set the sink into the granite. Fill the bowl with water to test it before setting. As for availability, welcome to the world of luxury plumbing products. The drain is worth waiting for. Find one on the internet and have it shipped next day air. I found K-7725's in multiple finishes at this site:
You guys are great. Found a similar model to the one you recommended locally. Good news it was not a Kohler and only paid $19 for it....with tax! Installed in about 10 minutes and it did the trick. I am convinced not to go with these types of sinks in my future homes. These things are all show and no go!!
