I had to cut off the black, 1 1/2" schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe to remove a cabinet. I couldn't find any ABS couplings in the hardware store, so they sold me a white, 1 1/2" coupling. Is that kosher to mix the two? Also, the PVC cement I have doesn't say to use it on ABS. It says it can be used on Type l and ll schedule 40 PVC.

How should I proceed?

I've used that combo before without problems. However, code requires a mechanical (Fernco, no hub) coupling between different materials. I got busted by an inspector about doing that before I got in the business. For a handyman job it's no big deal. The all purpose Oatey works fine as well as other brands... they will be rated for both ABS and PVC...read the label.

ABS and PVC are different chemically. The so-called "gluing" process is not really gluing, it is chemically welding. The solvent in the glue briefly liquifies the top surfaces of the joint so when the joint is slid together, the welding process occurs. The regular solvent or glue for ABS won't work on PVC and visa versa so unless the label specifically states it will work on both, don't try it. Personally, I'd go to a different store and get ABS fitting for the job, but the dual purpose glue should work OK.
